The seniors of Anoka are taking to the arts! The Rum River Art Center will be showcasing work from local seniors in the Vitality Arts program, with the Gallery Show Opening tomorrow, Saturday, December 7, from 3 PM to 5 PM. Enjoy some light refreshments and browse a variety of artwork by area seniors. The gallery will be open until the following Friday, December 13. Hours after the show opening are 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Thursday; please call ahead for hours on Friday and Saturday.

The Vitality Arts program is meant to inspire vitality and creativity in adults over 55 years old. Through various grants, the Rum River Art Center is able to provide these classes to enrich the lives of older adults through art. A grant from Aroha Philanthropies made it possible to offer three courses at a reduced price, providing more opportunities for seniors to get involved in art.

With various levels of talent and experience, these artists are able to explore their creative sides through a variety of materials, with classes for drawing, pottery, painting and more. There are also classes that take a different approach, using a variety of media in ways that are therapeutic or encourage self-discovery. The Mindful Art Practice is a 4-week course starting in February, which focuses on paying attention to the moment and calming the mind through mindfulness. On the other side of the coin is the Art Expression course, which also runs for 4 weeks. This course is all about allowing yourself to take risks and express yourself without fear or doubt. This course starts in March. Check out all the senior courses HERE.

While these classes are designed to improve the health, well-being, and sense of purpose in seniors, they’re open for any adult to register. For those seniors who aren’t sure about a 4-week course, there are Free Senior Art Days, and these fill up fast. These classes are only for adults age 55 and older. So far the upcoming classes are all full, but you can be put on the waitlist for the January 24 class.

If you’re young, or young at heart, the Rum River Art Center has plenty of courses to help you explore your artistic side and creativity!
